Kenya and Rwanda’s decision to remove visas for African travelers were met with enthusiasm. But visas are only part of the complexity of cross-border travel for Africans across the continent. Visa-free travel is a step in the right direction, but it is not sufficient to address the challenges facing Africans who cross borders in Africa.
The Sudanese armed forces have now lost control of Sudan’s two biggest cities while feeding the public a false sense of hope. In contrast, the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces, or RSF, has sold the narrative abroad that its forces are waging a righteous crusade on behalf of the very Sudanese population it terrorizes.
As with the war in Ukraine, fault lines in the international system have emerged amid the Israel-Hamas war. The variation in reactions is perhaps most evident among the African Union’s 55 member states, whose positions reflect different histories, traditions and interests as well as the preferences of national leaders.
