Washington imposed new sanctions on seven deputy directors in the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in Hong Kong last week. They are the latest addition to a list of 24 officials who have been blacklisted by the U.S. over their roles in undermining the city’s autonomy. 

Separately, the Biden administration also issued a 9-page advisory that warned American companies of the risks of operating in Hong Kong. Among those risks, the document flags retaliation from China for complying with U.S. sanctions as well as sweeping powers granted to law enforcement in Hong Kong by the Beijing-imposed National Security Law. Foreign nationals, including one U.S. citizen, have  been arrested under the legislation. “Business and rule of law risks that were formerly limited to mainland China are now increasingly a concern in Hong Kong,” the document notes.
