Yesterday, on the final night of the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, Harris formally accepted the party’s nomination for president with a forceful speech that also included her most extensive remarks yet on what her foreign policy would look like.
Of course, the speech—mostly designed to rile up the party—was light on details, but it did suggest that Harris plans to take an assertive and muscular approach to U.S. foreign policy. She promised to ensure that the U.S. “always has the strongest, most lethal fighting force in the world,” and touted her ability to respond to the perceived biggest threats—Russia, Iran, China and North Korea—to the United States.
At the same time, she sought to balance her views on the war in Gaza, simultaneously pledging to maintain U.S. support for Israel and recognizing the humanitarian impact of Israel’s military operations. “What has happened in Gaza over the past 10 months is devastating. So many innocent lives lost, desperate hungry people fleeing for safety over and over again,” she said.
