Progress Toward Security and Stability in Afghanistan, 2009
Defense Department | 2009-07-20
As mandated by Congress, the Defense Department must deliver a biannual report describing the comprehensive strategy of the United States for security and stability in Afghanistan. This June 2009 report outlines U.S. efforts to disrupt, dismantle, and eventually defeat al-Qaida and its extremist allies in Pakistan and Afghanistan. The report's executive summary notes that "U.S. force levels will increase substantially in the coming months to help ensure the security for expanded economic and social initiatives in Afghanistan, particularly in the south of the country."
